The Fashion Industries Favorite Business Network ...

I am looking to launch my line either for Spring 2011 or Fall 2011. I have over 5 years experience in the industry and currently work for a company designing uniforms. This has been a long time goal of mine to launch my own line of clothing targeted toward petite. I have several collections designed and samples I have made myself. However with a full-time job and very little money I don't really want to run my own company. Not only is it time consuming but instead of trying my hand at something I don't have skill in I would like to focus on keeping the quality of my product by focusing on what I am very good at; designing clothing. Are there any companies or retail concepts out there that allow a person to focus on the creative end while they take care of the rest like sourcing, managing production, sales reps, accounting, etc.? I know it's a reach in the dark but my theory is even if I take business classes (and I have), I will not be an expert at owning my own business and running your own company by yourself will require 90% of my time and I feel the design will suffer and failure would soon follow. I wouldn't want someone who took a few classes in mechanics to work on my car, so why should someone with incredible design ability and knowledge of clothing try to be a CEO? Any leeds, thoughts, and references are welcome. Thanks.

I have to tell you, it is realistic and frank to look on your talents and leave that that you don't know to others. But it is inherently counterproductive not to take the lead as the president of your own design concept and company. This is your baby; you have to show the leadership of how you want it sold and who should make it and how. There is no going around it. Hand in hand with this is your financial responsibility to this project. Since you will make all the key decisions and formulate the goals and concepts you will bear the money end. Success or Failure is part of starting your own line. IT has to be approached at 110%. This does not mean that you shouldnt have a job to pay the bills or support your design habit. It does mean working 18 hours a day and weekends and not having a life for a while until you drop it or become successful. If it is the latter it simply means the 18 hours and weekend will completely be consumed by your new company.

Please also understand that every element is important, design, production and sales. Design is less important than the others... the ability to sell and delivering what was promised in sales (production) make or break your company. The best design, if no one can sell it or produce it is useless and no one will know about it. Yes sales and production is foreign to you... Reality check.... tough luck!! you gotta learn and understand so at least you know if someone is screwing you. You can assign people and hire people to run sales and production, but it is you that has to lead.

If you only wish to design....REALITY check again..... stay at the uniform company or change jobs to work with a fashion company. If your PASSION is to have your own label....take the for production .,....hire the right sales team.... and make sure all is financed well.... MONEY is key....if you do not understand how I am implying it, please email me.

Please also note that you may not make money for two to three seasons...if you break even for the first two years....congratulations you are ahead of the game. This is not always the case....if you have a niche product., may be able to bypass and gain a corporate partner...yet once again you will be working for someone.

Starting your own label requires thick skin, open mind, stubbornness, common sense, patience and an effusive 4letter word vocabulary
Thank you for your reply. It's nice to know that someone in a forum cares enough to write a well thought out response. A lot of what you said I unfortunately know about all too well. I have a few friends that have started their lines by going through the Incubator program. So I see their struggles to make it happen. The difference is that they have money and have at least one person partnering with them. Without excess money, a mortgage, and a husband I don't want to upset I have to try to pursue my dream with as little risk as possible. For me failure isn't an option. I know logic would just say that I shouldn't bother doing this at all and just stay happy making clothes for myself in my basement, but I have this incredible pull and desire to do this. I just know I need the right opportunity and the right kind of help. I have seen listings for "consulting" services that supposedly take care of samples, production, and marketing for you to get your brand launched. Even if I had the money for that I'm not too sure about those offers. I do want to be involved in every aspect but I don't want to be in charge of it because it's too much for one person to handle all by themselves, especially with a full time job that functions during everyone else's working hours. When my friends that have partners and no day job are struggling, how am I supposed to make it happen with just me and a day job? That's why I'm hoping for some unorthodox opportunities here, maybe I don't have to do it like everyone else. Right?
I understand what you are saying....unfortunately....finding unorthodox methods means your supplier, buyers, retailers, sales people, and factory have to be ok with your different slant.

most likely will not happen....

additionally, if you are married.... like making a house purchase.... your garment business has to be a team effort as well, whatever iteration that will take.

no surprises... and constructive criticism. if you are serious about it, talk to your husband and make it a team decision. you WILL need his help.

my 2 cents... speaking from personal experience...
