How to Choose Shoes for a Baby ?

One of the things that moms like to do is shop for their babies, whether it is a newborn or toddler. During the first three years of the baby’s life they usually end up owning the most clothes, shoes, toys and other baby stuff.

It may be fun buying baby stuff but it is not an easy task. When shopping for the little one you need to take into consideration factors such as: cost, material, health and safety. It is believed that your baby does not need shoes before they start walking as hard soles can get in the way of their development.
Before the baby starts to walk it’s best to keep them bare feet. To keep baby’s feet warm you can dress them in sock or knitted shoes made of wool. As soon as they start walking then it’s time to head to the store.
Choosing the right shoes for a baby can be a challenge. Take into consideration the protection of your precious baby’s feet when buying their shoes. Remember that their feet are soft and tender and should be protected from dangerous things such as splinters; however, the shoes should not be too hard as this may chafe them.

How to choose shoes for baby:
·         Choose very flexible, rubbery bottoms with soft soles and sturdy upper material. Bottom should be non-skid to prevent them from slipping in spilt liquids and so forth. The best material for baby shoes is cloth because it’s breathable but very soft flexible leather can also be chosen. Hard leather is not recommended nor is plastic or other non-porous, un-breathable material.
·         Velcro shoes are better for babies because they are easier to fasten, slip on or off in case of emergencies. You also don’t have to worry about laces becoming undone which can be potentially dangerous for babies who just started walking. Even adults trip on their laces sometimes.
·         Shoes should be comfortable to them and not be too tight. When choosing the shoes take the baby with you and have them fit it. There should be enough space at the heel where you can wedge your pinky finger in; and space between the longest toe and front of shoes.
·         Like adults the baby’s feet tend to swell a bit during the day so the best time for fitting would be afternoon. This way you are sure to get a good fit.
·         Unlike adult shoes, babies don’t need to break in their new shoes. Have them wear the shoes for a little bit then make sure there is no chafing or bruising on your baby’s feet. If you find irritated spots, then you know you have chosen the wrong baby shoes.
·         Lastly, The younger the baby, the more lightweight the shoes should be.
