It just still may be possible to have my label say: "MADE IN USA", and it actually be true! I have searched, inquired, networked, blogged... and nothing, but I believe if you want it bad enough, and if you dig long and hard enough you just might find your buried treasure! I think I may have found mine right in my own back yard!! I have one more meeting with them tomorrow, but things look promising.
As I stated in some of my previous forms / blogs, I believe good networking is not only about promoting our own business, but it should also be about passing on information that may be helpful to others.
I know many of us upcoming Designers / Small businesses can’t run to China to have our product made for several reasons, one being we only want to start with 50 or 100 units, not 1,000, then there is quality control, YES, even if we can only have 50 made, we want the best quality for our product…I know I do!
If you are interested in my find, I will post information ASAP.

Permalink Reply by Charles Quand on June 24, 2011 at 11:08am I have done domestic sewing, now going on year 16. You can still pick and choose domestic manufacture. The unfortunate thing is that if they are a small outfit...under 30 machines. The economy is kicking their butt and they will accept anything, even if they have no clue. The best way to proceed is to check samples of work that has just come off their machines. If you are far away....be very careful....how will you resolve problems that will occur? Will you fly there, drive there, stay at a hotel, or TRUST them? How do they want you to pay...can they read a marker? do they cut on premises? do they follow progressive bundle protocol? Are their workers legal? Less an immigration thing, more a consistent employee pool. Remember, they can also hold your goods hostage...so you better have the money to pay completely. Do not let them make their problems be your problems.
How can you cover the bases? Ask questions....get answers....listen between the lines....this may be a passion, but it is more so a BUSINESS!!!! please do realize that the IRS couldnt give a hoot how nice your design is...it's about money and customer satisfaction. treat it like a business...if you are new to it....do not assume that it is "easy"....the people you deal with who are fashion industry wise will crucify you if you "fake" knowledge or "i know" everything.
Do not listen to something that is too good to be true....it won't be....
my 2 cents

Permalink Reply by Sanjeeda Baig on July 19, 2011 at 11:57am I have my own line and I do freelance designing as well.... I've had pretty tough time finding a manufacturer here in US who is also good, I do agree with Charles Quand, just because somebody says they are good doesn't mean they are actually good. I almost lost a contract for manufacturing yacht wear because of incompetent manufacturers. Please be careful.
Now I do manufacturing for my own line as well as small quantity for other lines as well.

"I believe good networking is not only about promoting our own business, but it should also be about passing on information that may be helpful to others."
I firmly believe that and have so much respect for you because of that statement. I am looking to network with others and learn as well as share with others anything that will be helpful. I am concentrating on the athletic side of fashion with compression wear and t-shirts. I am a graphic designer with a masters degree in marketing and have worked with a lot of design agencies. I am trying to get inside knowledge on short run companies with a reputation for producing quality products. I think it would be advantageous if we could form a think tank group that would help each others overcome milestone in this industry and each one reaching back to help the next upon success.
Just my thoughts

I appreciate your comments to my blog. Since I posted that blog, I found a US manufacturer that did my first samples, and order. They did a pretty good job, but unfortunately went out of business. I did run across another manufacturer, visited them while I was in LA, they seem to have a reputable business, but I have not tried them, so therefore I cannot recommend them, but you are welcome to their contact info.
