If you have the aptitude and determination and know where to find a good opportunity to start in the industry, then it might do good to not do University. If you don't want to jump straight into the deep end, then University would be a better option

Yes and no.
If you are broke like many of us, yes. You need a sound education to get some crapy jobs till you get your experience-then you get the right job and start focusing on you own dream.
If you come from money, you don't need it.
Just hire people and put in your label.
The story that many people tell you as if things just happened like miracles or hard work without education in the business is just bull...they had big back-up.
Someone j. Lo, Puff Daddy and so on came from an other field which gave enough money to persue that field.
So depends on your pecuniary background you need a sound education.
If you were in Florida, I am going to offer a course in handbag making you would come but still a college Ed is the best.

I didn't go to fashion shcool but life did school me. I was born, grew up and breath fashion...
Well this is always better if you can get a good formation before getting a career within the fashion industry ...

some schools are not that expensive if you look closely ...

but definitly I think this is better to get the education , not to get the "talent" but more for directions and maturity !
Indian Universities are better option for you.
Cost of living and University fees are very low.
And designers from these institutes are world famous today.

Some colleges are NIFT, NIFD and many more......

When in doubt, it is usually safe to follow Maryanne's advise. I see she has given you a few replies.

In my opinion, school is "important", but never "neccessary". If you have in your DNA what it takes to be a success you will achieve your goals with or without school.

In a perfect world, YES go to school. However, if money is tight and school us not in the cards, don't panic. Just be prepared to work hard.

My suggestion to you is work for someone with good fashion experience. Hopefully they will mentor you (free real world lessons).
It would be best to go to school for that..You gain more experience and could get better connections.I currently am enrolled in it.. Its best to go to a university that offers fashion design and merchandising it gives you more variety and more career oppurtunities..If you have any questions just let me know im yoly
I suggest you as a consultant,An image academy which is best in south africa and trust me it's best place for image consultant courses from which we can sharp our more skills in fashion. Many reasons behind why you should choose this academy for growing career. This academy said: why this academy is best in africa

1. SA IMAGE is the only course in South Africa that is certified by the International Association of Continuing Education and Training and recognized by the Association of Image Consultants International (www.aici.org)

2. The course is complemented by a large amount of high quality and comprehensive take home materials.

3. Our style and colour resources are based on a modern approach towards image consulting. Now it is possible to not only teach your client verbally about styles and colours, but concrete materials can be given to the client for future reference. Clients not only feel like they get value for their money by receiving state-of-the-art take-home materials, they love referring to these accurate guides after the consultant has left.

4. After training with The South African Image Academy, you can be an independent consultant. Unlike some Image Consulting Courses, you may, but do not need to use our name for your business.

5. Our 10 day course is not only longer and more intensive than most companies in SA, we also offer our consultants with lifelong mentorship.

6. We do not only teach you how to style people but also teach you the essentials of marketing and managing your own business.

7. It is truly an excellent foundation course to start a business with. It won’t be necessary to retrain with any other image consulting company after you have trained with us.

This academy is really good and has proved in academy world. This academy gives many images consultant which they have name in fashion world.I suggest you if you are looking to start business in image consultant then you should go first to the website: http://www.saimage.co.za/.
In most cases well-known designers started at a young age, and only a few have actually enrolled in a university to study fashion, most of them have already been in the industry creating fashionable dresses and formal suits before they decided to enroll in a university, So reach out for your dream, if you cant afford it to enroll in a university for now, then do it later, but you have to continue what you love to do, and earn with it.
well, u need some bases, but the most important thing in fashion is to meet the right people at the right moment....
