oops sorry its late..well im from wolverhampton, UK..im just worried how hard it would be for me if i cant go to uni :S im hoping to move to a different country at some point as well
Actually having a diploma in a university sometimes is just a formality, there are some professional fashion designer right now who don't even have a change to be in a class room of a fashion school like Ralf Lauren but through his hard work and creativity he proves that everything on earth is equal. Being in a fashion industry that has a lot of competitors you have to have your own fashion style who is not too far in the reality of fashion trends today.
are you truly talented?
what are your strengths?
do you already hand sketch?
are you familiar with photoshop/illustrator?
have you contacted designers whose work you admire?
have you thought of some sort of apprenticeship? ( more possible in europe than in the states)
if you can work alongside a designer and show your talents,
then there is a chance that university might not be necessary.
( the uk is far more creative fashion wise than the states. not just my opinion, but a fact)
start contacting people, can you work in fashion during the day and possibly start taking courses at night?

can you sew very well?
make your own patterns?
do you have an inherent " eye" for fashion?
can you accurately predict which direction fashion will go to next?

it is rare, but there are people who are amazingly talented who have never been technically " university" educated.
they naturally have the ability in them and it is a gift.
once again, very rare, but true talent will just spring from you ~ the rest you can learn along the way.
you can teach yourself certain things, like sewing and pattern making.
it's all trial and error. and you learn as you go along in this industry.
even the top designers are learning something new everyday.
make use of your local library. read read read everything you can find about fashion.
the next step is up to you.
good luck to you.
Hello Maryanne,

The experience you have ..spoke in the answers you gave

Reading your response ,answered a lot of questions .

I have more than half of the list in me,especially the technical stuff .I have a design career in different mediums spanning 2 decades including International. But my passion is Fabric /fashion /garments/sketching and all that stuff ...I just can't pack the sewing machine ...I keep finding stuff to improve ......Perfection is another challenge ...The fall OF THE FABRIC HAS TO BE RIGHT .

The challenge I'm facing is that, I'm new to the Bay area ....I'm still exploring the Designers ....
I have been going off and on ...on going to university

Can I get apprentice in the San Francisco/Bay area without going to University ?????
Would the Designers work with somebody who has different mediums of design experience ,
but some fashion experience but a lot of talent ????
hello, i just saw your questions to me, all these weeks later. i have been so very busy.
The only way to find out about the designers is to contact them, ask questions & see what they say.
do you have a portfolio? or samples of your design level which would demonstrate your knowledge?

i don't have any experience about the west coast.

but i would say, start by contacting the designers you wish to work with.
but have everything you need to show them your skill level.
best of luck.
NO! you do not have to go to a university to become successful in the fashion industry. It's all about talent and exposure and meeting the right people. It all depends what you want to do in the industry. nowadays because of the economy many places are not hiring so it is the best time to start small independent companies.
I think no... Because there are lots of vocational school offering fashion crash courses.....

If you have the aptitude and determination and know where to find a good opportunity to start in the industry, then it might do good to not do University. If you don't want to jump straight into the deep end, then Uni would be a better option. I just find that those that don't do Uni spend 4 years working their way up the career ladder instead and end up with better pay and prospects in a shorter space of time. It depends on if you want to do a full time job or spend time getting a better rounded set of skills.

Even if you haven't been to Uni, somewhere like H&M have lots of opportunities for people to go in at an entry level and work their way up to the role they really want, check out http://www.hmretailcareers.com
No way there has been so many people who made it big Marc Ecko and daymon John ed hardy and the list goes on
The Image Academy is one of Europe's most rapidly growing image consultancy schools. For this reason, The Image Academy, led by two of Europe’s most enterprising stylists has teamed up with Style Icon Ltd in London who are offering fashion forward styling courses in London, UK from August 2009 onwards.
We provide fashion forward styling courses that have been set up specifically to offer a new level of professionalism and expertise to wannabe stylists, PR professionals, boutique owners, high street retailers, fashion students and just about anyone who has a passion for fashion. Our tutors have extensive experience in all areas of image consulting, personal and fashion styling, make-up artistry and corporate training and development.

Image consultancy training across the world is renowned for being old fashioned, run by theorists, and offer very little insight into the actual making of a successful styling consultancy. This ultimately leads to a frustrated and disappointed candidate who comes out of training with little insight into a very dynamic and rewarding industry. Now with the arrival of The Image Academy, students can expect new insights into how to harness the power of social media and other novel business practices to ensure a successful career.

Shopping for a living has got to be one of the most desirable jobs out there and with the rise and rise of style reality programmes, there is no shortage of fashionistas queuing up to learn the ropes to make their mark on the fashion world! But contrary to popular belief, making a career out of being a stylist is certainly no easy feat.

Each course is given by an experienced tutor provided by The Image Academy who will provide real-life examples and experiences throughout the course notes, this practical knowledge will benefit all students throughout the 5 days. On the final day, all students will be given practical hands on experience of sourcing stores for each client based on their shape, height, size, budget and style and will also participate in make-up demonstrations.

So why should you choose to train with The Image Academy over any other styling agency:
• Our courses are tailored to give you in-depth and practical information which will be used on a daily basis and will offer you the theory that will bring you from student to fashionista in a number of days!
• The course is made up of 70 different topics and answers every question you may be faced with in the real world.
• It covers everything from getting started to colour analysis, body analysis, makeup, corporate image, working in TV and magazines to starting your own business and getting your first client.
• The course is very in-depth and can either be done in a group of ten or on one to one basis with a tutor.
• Certificates are issued to all students who have successfully completed the course.
• The benefit of our course is that you will receive a unique mentoring service and hands on experience with a professional Personal Stylist.
• We do not believe in giving you the theory to teach yourself, our tutors are there to help you every step of the way and answer any questions you may have.
• All students will have the opportunity to shadow an experienced Personal Stylist, thus knowing the format of the day and how to approach and work with clients.
