Fashion Industry Network

The Fashion Industries Favorite Business Network ...

In all honesty, I am not 100% certain that a social network is beneficial to the fashion industry. I think that in theory it makes sense. However, is it really practical?

Do middle age fashion industry professionals grasp the idea of social networking? We have been pounded with the idea that this is for kids or people looking for a date. Does anyone really understand the potential in regards to developing business contacts?

In my opinion, business professionals may be hesitant to utilize this type of system. However, many of those people that have used social networking over the past several years (in high school or college), are now old enough to enter the work force. Hopefully, many of them will enter the fashion industry and carry with them the experience of networking. I guess it is possible that they move from using a network to find parties, and start using a professional network like this one to find fabric and trim suppliers.

Anyway, my point is that I am not sure if anyone actually has interest in a fashion industry network. My hopes are that we can all work together to create an interesting social enviroment to make our business lives a bit easier.

Again, I am not sure if this social network for the fashion industry will be a good idea, but I guess we are going to find out...

If you have any thoughts on the subject, please make your opinion known. We look forward to hearing from you.

Social Networks are great if they are used in the right way. They can and should used to enhance one's professional growth and also to meet and interact with some wonderful people in the fashion industry.
It is somewhat unfortunate that in some cases it's "who you know" and "connections" that you have will advance you in the fashion industry instead of good and creative talent. Though i i agree that it's important to socialize, I feel that there are other ways to reach new heights.
Kristen - thank you for your comments... I agree with your statements.

Success in this industry is a mix of talent, good fortune, and the proper connections. Even the worlds greatest designer, would go un-noticed without the connection of a retail buyer to purchase their product...
i really like this site. It comes accross as positive and as if it was created for all the right reasons. There is no arrogance on this site and is fresh so I like it.
I believe there are great benefits awaiting fashion industry workers who social network over the Internet. Social networks are excellent tools for forming cooperative marketing strategies; or partnering for resource buying. There are over a hundred event coordinators within Urban Fashion Network. Many of them use UFN to find Stylist and Fashion Designers for their social, or non-profit fashion events. These events can be cost free marketing opportunities for young apparel brands. And many of these affairs are open to vending opportunities. I believe the most important part about joining a social networking website, is that every member is on the same page about who is who, and what's happening when or where.

I also post photo coverage of upcoming fashion collections within the Events section of the site. All is welcome!
So far I have created numerous contacts with both suppliers and buyers. This site is an incredible way to stay connected to others in the industry that can answer questions and establish business relationships.
What my short and modest* life-experience has taught me, personal contacts and 'knowing people' is ALWAYS important and beneficial.

*and I'm not saying this out of humility or to be polite, but out of (yet growing) respect towards life-experience.

I'm new to this site - found it today, actually - and haven't yet dug in its deepest corners, but it seems useful. Thanks to the author of the idea!
Paula - thank you for your comments.. This network is approximately 6 months old and we are approx 900 members at this time. Because we are still fairly new and small, we do not yet have deepest corners to search out... However, we are improving each day. Hopefully you will be able to find helpful information and contacts on this network. Please be patient as the groups and forum conversations develop.
I just join the network today and I'm glad that I do. Generally, people think social networking is for young people, but I think a social network especially like yours, is for everyone, regardless age or country, to exchange their opinions or their expertise in the fashion industry. Thanks for letting me in!
Roderick!
Just wanted to say hi!
You probably don't remember me....we met @ a trimming store I used to work in, in the late 80's or very early 90's.
I'm glad you're doing well.
I just wanted to say "hello".

I've found a lot of useful information as well as met some great people on this site. Great website!!!
I too am new here and can't explain the importance of networks and social networking. In fact my entire job in the fashion industry is to run social sites for business and social network sites like twitter, facebook, myspace, bebo, etc. It's only become a paying position in perhaps the last two years in the past has been called PR or Marketing but now there are people out there (me) who make a living running social network pages on the internet. We've come very far in tech in very little time. Its why places like this are necessary and great!
I think networking improves the success of a business regardless of industry.
Every industry faces the challenges of the internet and readily accessible volume of information that used to be classified as 'trade secrets'. I think every business, to a certain extent, has to gain an adapt to thrive mentality.

For me, part of that is networking. Its still amazing to me to hear how many high end designers never turn on a computer except to check e-mail, or have staffers specifically to do their web searches for them. Industry networking sites like this might give industry professionals a reason to log in, do business, and learn.

If this site is successful, it can only help the industry move forward over all. So, thanks for trying it out. :)
